How to Get More Google Reviews (Without Being Annoying)

← Back to all posts

Google reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals. More reviews and better ratings directly improve your position in the Google Maps pack. But how do you actually get them without pestering your customers?

Why Reviews Matter (The Numbers)

Google has confirmed that reviews affect local ranking through "prominence" -- how well-known your business is online. More specifically:

- Review count: More reviews = more prominence = higher ranking

  • Average rating: Higher ratings signal quality
  • Review recency: Recent reviews signal an active, current business
  • Response rate: Responding to reviews shows engagement (Google notices)
  • Keywords in reviews: When customers naturally mention your services, it reinforces your relevance
  • The Ethical Way to Get More Reviews

    1. Ask at the Right Moment

The best time to ask is immediately after a positive experience. Not a week later -- right then.

    - A customer compliments your service? "That means a lot. Would you mind leaving us a Google review? It really helps."

  • Finished a successful project? Send a thank-you email with the review link within 24 hours.
  • Customer posts something positive on social media? DM them: "Thanks so much! Would you mind sharing that as a Google review too?"
  • 2. Make It Stupidly Easy

The more steps between "I'll leave a review" and actually submitting it, the more people drop off.

    - Generate your direct review link from your Google Business Profile dashboard

  • Shorten it with a URL shortener
  • Put it EVERYWHERE:
  • - Email signature - Receipts / invoices - Follow-up emails - Business cards - Your website ("Review us on Google" button) - QR code in your physical location - Text message after appointments (if appropriate)

    3. Use Follow-Up Emails

If your business involves appointments, projects, or purchases, send a follow-up email:

Subject: "How was your experience with [Business Name]?"

    "Hi [Name],

Thanks for choosing us. We hope [specific thing -- the plumbing repair / your lesson / your visit] went well.

If you have 2 minutes, a Google review would mean a lot to us. It helps other people in [area] find us.

    [Direct review link]

    Thanks, [Your name]"

    4. Respond to Every Review

This matters for two reasons: 1. Google sees responses as engagement (ranking signal) 2. Other potential customers read your responses

For positive reviews: "Thank you [name]! We're glad [specific reference to what they said]. See you next time."

For negative reviews: "Hi [name], sorry to hear about this. We'd like to make it right. Could you email us at [email] so we can look into it?"

Never argue. Never get defensive. Other potential customers are watching.

    5. Don't Do These Things

    - Never offer incentives. "Leave a review, get 10% off" violates Google's policy and can get your listing suspended.

  • Never buy fake reviews. Google's detection is sophisticated. Fake reviews look similar (no detail, all 5 stars, similar writing style). Getting caught means suspension.
  • Never ask only happy customers. This is called "review gating" and Google prohibits it. You must give ALL customers the same opportunity to review.
  • Never create reviews from your own accounts. Google tracks IP addresses and account patterns.
  • What's a Good Number of Reviews?

There's no magic number, but here are benchmarks:

    | Reviews | Status | |---------|--------| | 0-5 | Not enough. Google may not show you in the Map Pack. | | 5-20 | Getting there. You're credible but not competitive. | | 20-50 | Solid. Competitive for most local markets. | | 50-100 | Strong. You'll outrank most local competitors on reviews alone. | | 100+ | Excellent. Major trust signal for both Google and potential customers. |

The most important thing: consistency. 2-3 new reviews per month is better than 20 in one week then nothing for 6 months.

    What About Star Rating?

    - 4.0-4.5 is the sweet spot. High enough to be trusted, realistic enough to be believed.

  • 5.0 with few reviews looks suspicious. People trust 4.7 with 80 reviews more than 5.0 with 5 reviews.
  • Below 3.5 is a problem. Address the underlying service issues before worrying about SEO.
