We're not an SEO agency. We sell audit reports. So we have no reason to keep you in the dark about how SEO actually works.
Here are the things most agencies won't say out loud.
The initial SEO audit and fix list? That's 2-4 hours of work. Agencies charge GBP 500+ for it. The monthly retainer after that? Often includes work that takes 5-10 hours per month, charged at GBP 500-2,000.
This isn't necessarily a rip-off -- expertise has value. But you should know what you're paying for. Always ask: "What specific deliverables will I receive each month?"
If an agency promises "page 1 in 3 months" or "guaranteed #1 ranking," run away. Google's algorithm considers hundreds of factors, many outside anyone's control. No one -- not Google itself -- can guarantee specific positions.
What an honest agency CAN say: "We'll improve your technical foundation, content quality, and local presence, which historically leads to ranking improvements for businesses like yours."
Agencies often say "SEO takes 6-12 months to see results." This is partly true for competitive keywords, but it's also convenient -- it keeps you paying for months before you can judge if it's working.
The truth: quick wins (security headers, meta tags, schema markup, speed fixes) can improve your scores within days. Content and link building take months. But you should see measurable progress within 4-8 weeks, not 12 months.
If nothing has changed after 3 months, ask hard questions.
Agencies have a financial incentive to make SEO seem impossibly complex. It's not.
Things you can do yourself:
Things you probably need help with:
An audit tells you which is which, so you know what to DIY and what to hand to a professional.
If someone offers SEO for GBP 50/month, what they're actually selling is:
Bad SEO can actively harm your rankings. Google penalises manipulative practices like link schemes, keyword stuffing, and thin content.
Most agencies use the same tools anyone can access:
What you're really paying for is expertise in interpreting the data and knowing what to do about it. That's valuable -- but you should know it's expertise, not magic.
Despite every "SEO hack" article online, the single most reliable way to improve rankings is to publish genuinely useful content that answers your customers' questions.
No amount of technical optimisation compensates for a website with nothing worth reading.
An agency that focuses on technical SEO while ignoring content is missing the point. An agency that writes thin, keyword-stuffed blog posts is actively hurting you.
We're transparent about all of this. Our audit:
If the audit shows you need professional help, by all means hire someone. But at least you'll know exactly what you need, so no one can oversell you.
