We've audited hundreds of small business websites. The same mistakes come up again and again. Here are the 10 most common, ranked by how much they're hurting you.
The mistake: Not claiming your Google Business Profile, or leaving it incomplete.
Why it hurts: When someone searches "your service near me," Google shows the Map Pack with 3 businesses. If you don't have a claimed, verified, complete profile, you won't be one of them.
The fix: Go to business.google.com. Claim your business. Fill in everything: hours, description, services, photos, attributes. Time: 30 minutes.
The mistake: Unoptimised images, too many scripts, cheap hosting.
Why it hurts: Google measures your Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). If it's over 2.5 seconds, you're being penalised. We've seen small business sites with LCP over 20 seconds.
The fix: Compress images (use WebP format), enable lazy loading, remove unnecessary plugins. Run Google PageSpeed Insights to see your score. Time: 2-4 hours.
The mistake: Your location pages exist but have no structured data telling Google about your business address, hours, and services.
Why it hurts: Google uses schema markup to understand your business and show it in rich results and the Map Pack. Without it, Google has to guess.
The fix: Add LocalBusiness JSON-LD to every location page. If you're on WordPress, Yoast or Rank Math can help. Time: 30 minutes per page.
The mistake: Uploading images without adding alternative text.
Why it hurts: Google can't "see" images. Without alt text, your visual content is invisible to search engines. It's also an accessibility violation under UK law.
The fix: Go through every image and add descriptive alt text. "Baby swimming lesson in warm pool" not "IMG_4521". Time: 2-3 hours for most sites.
The mistake: A web design company moved your site to a new domain, and the old domain either doesn't redirect or redirects everything to the homepage.
Why it hurts: Every backlink to your old domain loses 10-15% of its value through each redirect hop. A blanket redirect to the homepage wastes almost all of it.
The fix: Ensure page-to-page 301 redirects from old URLs to new URLs. Use Google Search Console's Change of Address tool. Consider whether the old domain was actually better. Time: varies.
The mistake: Your web server returns no security headers.
Why it hurts: Google considers site security part of page experience. Missing headers signal neglect. Chrome may show security warnings to visitors.
The fix: Add 6 security headers to your server config. Takes 30 minutes for a developer. Zero cost.
The mistake: Having more than one H1 heading on a page.
Why it hurts: The H1 tells Google what the page is about. Multiple H1s dilute that signal -- Google doesn't know which is the real topic.
The fix: Each page should have exactly one H1. Convert extra H1s to H2s. Time: 15 minutes.
The mistake: Blog or news section that hasn't been updated in 6+ months.
Why it hurts: Google uses freshness as a signal. A stale blog suggests the business might be stale too. Your competitors who publish regularly get an advantage.
The fix: Publish 2-4 posts per month targeting keywords your customers actually search for. Quality over quantity -- one genuinely useful post beats five thin ones.
The mistake: Website looks fine on desktop but is broken or awkward on mobile.
Why it hurts: Google uses mobile-first indexing -- it ranks you based on your mobile site, not your desktop site. Over 60% of searches happen on phones.
The fix: Test your site on a phone. Check that text is readable without zooming, buttons are large enough to tap, and nothing requires horizontal scrolling.
The mistake: Not having Google Search Console or Google Analytics set up.
Why it hurts: You're flying blind. You don't know which keywords bring traffic, which pages perform well, or whether your SEO efforts are working.
The fix: Set up Google Search Console (free, 10 minutes) and Google Analytics (free, 15 minutes). Check them monthly at minimum.
